OMRON unveils a new interactive blood pressure monitoring skill for Amazon Alexa
Users can simply ask Alexa to compare blood pressure over time and flag higher-than-usual readings.
30 January 2019, London, UK – In order to enable people to stay in control of their health and make appropriate decisions to live with zero compromise, OMRON presents its new interactive connection to Amazon’s cloud-based voice service Alexa that is capable of comparing blood pressure readings. It also allows users to find out about their cardiovascular health quickly and easily by simply saying phrases like “Alexa, what was my blood pressure average this month?”.
Alexa skills add new capabilities that allow you to create a more personalized experience with your Amazon Echo, Amazon Fire TV, and other Alexa-enabled devices. The OMRON skill for Alexa works through the OMRON connect app, which in turn syncs with all of OMRON’s connected blood pressure monitors. The new skill allows Alexa to compare readings across different dates and times of the day, and the latest reading against the last highest or lowest recorded reading. The new skill can also provide the average reading upon request and locates and reads back their latest blood pressure reading.
In addition, it can also provide guidelines and tips to ensure accurate blood pressure measurement. As a result, users will get updates on their recent blood pressure readings and insights on the state of their health in real time, just by asking Alexa by voice.
Although everybody knows that health matters, sometimes people find it hard to make it fit into their lifestyle. For this reason, OMRON Healthcare is committed to equipping people with innovative technology that makes their daily blood pressure monitoring experience easier. Besides, research has shown that self-monitoring might contribute to a decrease in blood pressure levels as it improves treatment compliance [1].
“At OMRON, we’re focused on helping people live active and comfortable lives, without any compromises on health. Adding our OMRON skill for Alexa is a major stride in that direction,” said OMRON Healthcare Europe President and CEO, André Van Gils. “Your blood pressure provides important health insights. Monitoring it regularly empowers you with knowledge, helps you act on your numbers sooner, and can even save your life”.
According to the World Health Organization, the number of Europeans suffering from high blood pressure amounts to over 40% of the population aged 25 years or more [2]. “It’s more important than ever for us to find new ways to help people simplify and ease their blood pressure monitoring habits, so that they can understand and manage their condition more efficiently,” said Van Gils.
To enable the OMRON skill for Alexa, all users need is the Alexa app and the OMRON connect mobile app, which are available for free download from the Apple iOS or Google Play stores. Each time they want to access information about their heart health, they just have to ask Alexa to open OMRON connect. The OMRON Alexa skill is available as of January 2019 in UK and will be rolled out in the rest of Europe in the upcoming months.
